Ubuntu is the most used Linux distribution today and one the most easy to use ones out there. It has improved and gained a lot of users since its release back in 2004. Up to the current latest release, 9.10 Karmic Koala, Ubuntu was based on the style “Human“, probably because of its slogan, Linux for human beings, this however will change with the next release of Ubuntu which 10.04 Lucid Lynx as Ubuntu will dump the Human look and adopt the new Light look and feel.

C’mon i know you guys are excited about this, who isn’t!

I am really excited about it because there are small very cool new things coming up with this e.g. Ubuntu new will have a new offical logo and community logos, new gtk themes and of course a new and simplified boot screen.

Now if you want more information about this visit the official website at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Brand.

That link is the official page and has a a lot more info and even a gallery of the new looks which i cant show you here since they are not mine.

But that’s it for this post, see you next time :)

Calling all Geeks – Fedora 13 needs your help!

Posted by waqar On February - 28 - 2010View Comments

Hey guys!

First of all i would like to apologize for such a short notice, i should have made a post about this earlier.

The Fedora project needs a slogan for their next release of Fedora, Fedora 13, they need it as quick as possible so that it can be include it in the alpha release of Fedora 13 that’s coming out on March 9.

All slogan suggestions need to submitted by 2nd of March, 2010.

Here’s how your slogan needs to be:

  • Must be between 1-3 words
  • Slogan needs to be an active sentence, like a command e.g. F8: Go higher F11: Reign
  • Slogan must be positive and reflect the idea that Fedora lets users achieve something great
  • Should reflect one or more of the themes from the artwork created by the Artwork team for this release (see the wiki page)

You can find more info and submit your suggestions on the Wiki page located at: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F13_release_slogan

There already are some ideas posted so be quick in posting yours. This is a good opportunity for all you Linuxers to show your love for Linux ;)

Good Luck!

Congratulations, my fellow Internet users.

While it may not be on this day, the Internet is indeed around thirty years old. One can argue that its older, but since we started using it, its been about 30 years. When did it all start? Well, Mr. Kleinrock of Stanford research claims that on October 29th, 1969 is when he first successfully transmitted data to a computer in Menlo Park. Aside from that, it’s been a great 30 years. Even more thankfully, censorship on the Internet is far and few between. Even though acts in Australia are providing filtering, most of the world still enjoys uncensored Internet, which is great. Many believe the core values of the Internet are free access to all data, for all. I myself, believe this. No one person should be restricted from knowing anything, and the Internet has been great tool for spreading news. Without getting to political, I’m finishing this statement with I believe that the Internet is the bane of all conspiracy theorists.

Anyway, I’ve gotten my point across to everyone, happy 30 years of Internet, and heres to another 30.

By the way, the picture is a visual representation of the internet.

A couple of months ago i made a post about Kublax, a UK alternative to Mint, which has proved to be very useful in the time I have used it, as it has given a summary over all of my bank accounts on my income and expenditure.

kublax

Unfortunately, a few moments ago I received the following E-Mail:

“Dear Kublax Customer

It is with great regret that we announce the closure of our service as we have been forced to take the business into administration. Over the course of the last 6 months we have been trying hard to raise funding which would have allowed us to launch our enhanced new product and develop our offering further. Unfortunately we now have to admit defeat.

We are sorry that we have not been able to repay your trust in Kublax and particularly disappointed not to be able to launch the new enhanced version of the service which was being shaped to a very large extent by your Feedback on the current service.

Kublax’s partner, Yodlee, will be deleting all user data, including online banking details from its servers. Once deleted no further information will be gathered and stored for Kublax customers. Your transactional data will also be completely erased from our servers by close of business on Friday 19th February. We will not pass your data on to any third parties.

If you wish to contact Sridhar or I you can reach us at the following email address – kublaxenquiry@googlemail.com

Many thanks again for your support and we hope that Kublax was able to help you make slightly better sense of your finances over the last year or so.

Tom and Sridhar”

Its a shame to see this happen, as although at times the service was intermittent, it was an enjoyable experience.

Do you know of any alternatives for us in the UK to use? Let us know in the comments

Google Buzz – New Social Networking Service

Posted by waqar On February - 11 - 2010View Comments

If you’ve been on Google’s blog lately you might know that Google recently took the wraps of its new Social networking service called Google buzz and my God It feels like Google is getting into everything these days but anyway.

Anyway to what is Google buzz?

According to Google this is a social networking service like Facebook and Twitter but the thing about this is that it will baked into Gmail which I think is great because you won’t have to sign up for anything as long as you have a Gmail account and this could attract people towards it.

According to Google here are some of the features that Google Buzz will provide.

  • Accessible from mobile phone
  • Share either publicly or privately
  • Ability to follow people, just like you do in Twitter
  • Integration with you Gmail inbox: This means that the comments that you get are going to be sent right to your Google inbox
  • Ability to browse photos from popular sites like Flickr and Picasa
  • Ability to import stuff from Google reader, Twitter, Flickr and Picasa
  • Ability to see updates in real time: This is a killer in my opinion
  • Buzz will also show you the popular stuff e.g. interesting posts etc

Google Buzz is supposed to compete with Facebook which is the largest Social networking site and also Twitter.

Note that Google started a social networking site back in 2004 called Orkut but it just couldn’t compete with Facebook.

You can tell that Google Buzz promises a lot so it will be interesting to see how it will compare with Facebook and Twitter in the future.

Anyway that’s it for this post see ya next time.

With Apple announcing its new tablet, named the “iPad”, it seems the device has had very mixed responses. With some deeming it as a “giant iPod Touch”, its clear that the iPad looks evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

As shown in Engadget’s Post:

“It’s a half-inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen IPS LCD display, and it’s running a custom 1GHz Apple “A4″ chip developed by the P.A. Semi team, with a 10-hour battery life and a month of standby. It’ll come in 16, 32, and 64GB sizes, and it’s got the expected connectivity: very little. There’s a 30-pin Dock connector, a speaker, a microphone, Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi and optional 3G, as well as an accelerometer and a compass.

To give my own thoughts, unless the screen space is something that annoys an iPhone or iPod Touch user (or something thats required, especially when web browsing), I would hastily say this isn’t a worthwhile investment (as it lacks even the basic features of Netbooks Steve Jobs bashed in his keynote!), and to go for a smaller device if on the go (and if staying at home, go for a full laptop that has flash!).

Whats more is that the same amount of icons are on the screen of the device as the iPhone and iTouch, which surprises me as the device runs applications for the smaller devices, surely we would want more icons on our homescreens?

That aside, with the A4 chip apple have released with the device allowing 10 hours of HD Playback, we could see some competition in this area.

What do you think about the Apple iPad? Will you be buying one?

By now, you have most likely heard the news that Haiti has been struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on 1/12/10. Haiti is the poorest country in its geographic location, and simply does not have the proper resources within the country to provide for itself. The earthquake has downed most of Haiti’s telephone/communication grid, port, and now the FAA has blocked air travel to Haiti as there is no fuel at the airport and is over crowded with grounded aircraft.

Many countries from around the world have stepped in to help provide humanitarian aid, and you can too. If you are one of the caring, and willing to donate, you can donate directly to the American Red Cross by texting:

If you live in America, you can text “Haiti” to 90999 and $10.00 will be donated. The charges will appear on your next phone bill.

News: USB 3.0 At a Glimpse

Posted by kidguru On January - 11 - 2010View Comments

USB 3.0 has sparked a lot of talk since it’s release and at its first glimpse of release at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 3.0 proves to be much faster then the previous 2.0.

THE IMAGE I WISH TO USE (http://www.clker.com/clipart-16546.html )

The technology was shown in an HP laptop that was transferring a 2.16 GB file over 3.0 and 2.0 speeds were compared at

3.0 = 1 Minutes 4 seconds

2.0= 2 Minutes 7 seconds

not only was the USB 3.0 faster but better built in terms of power usage , its uses half the power of its previous version. In terms of companies working to out put new devices supporting the 3.0 upcoming standard Western Digital already released a new WD My Book supporting 3.0 speeds meaning faster back up , transfer ,etc.

Other companies like HP & Asus are working on releasing more laptops with this power efficient & quick 3.0 standard. Videos of the transfers speeds can be viewed over on the blog post on CNET’s coverage of the CES keynote.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10428132-64.html

While lots of talk are sprouting for the new advancements made in 3.0 USB standard we’ll have to wait to see not only how manufactures react but consumers as well , but at the same time Intel introduced a competing connection known as Light Peak which will have even faster speeds and will be a universal port for all connectors like Dsiplay port , VGA , HDMI , USB ,etc.  Only time will tell as the technology adapts and advances.
