I would say the best package to get is Microsoft office 2010 beta. It looks very good and it is free. It is quite a big file size though and it did not work on my pc.
  • Microsoft Office will never be free, recently Microsoft have started releasing RC versions of their software so that people can try it and be lured in for the final purchase. It is good marketing overall and Microsoft are not the first to do it.

Funny how you recommend it even though you state it didn't actually work?

Anyway, I am surprised that http://www.zoho.com has not been mentioned on here. Considering Zoho apps are all web based like Google Docs, they really are fully featured and provide a lot more than the Google versions. Give it a try.

Although it's not a complete package it's a word processing program, I also belive there is a portable version of it as well.

It might be a beta but it's still free at the end of the day.

  • Google Docs (http://www.docs.google.com). It's online though, so it might not be of use to some people. It comes with a few cool things in it though.

There's also AbiWord. It's a free word processor, and it's open source. There's nothing with it - just the processor itself. It's for Windows only, to my knowledge. I remember using StarOffice at a time, but it's no longer free, for some reason. Still, here's the link for AbiWord.
