Calling all Geeks – Fedora 13 needs your help!

Posted by waqar On February - 28 - 2010View Comments

Hey guys!

First of all i would like to apologize for such a short notice, i should have made a post about this earlier.

The Fedora project needs a slogan for their next release of Fedora, Fedora 13, they need it as quick as possible so that it can be include it in the alpha release of Fedora 13 that’s coming out on March 9.

All slogan suggestions need to submitted by 2nd of March, 2010.

Here’s how your slogan needs to be:

  • Must be between 1-3 words
  • Slogan needs to be an active sentence, like a command e.g. F8: Go higher F11: Reign
  • Slogan must be positive and reflect the idea that Fedora lets users achieve something great
  • Should reflect one or more of the themes from the artwork created by the Artwork team for this release (see the wiki page)

You can find more info and submit your suggestions on the Wiki page located at: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F13_release_slogan

There already are some ideas posted so be quick in posting yours. This is a good opportunity for all you Linuxers to show your love for Linux ;)

Good Luck!

My Hopes for the Apple iPhone OS 4.0

Posted by DuncanM On February - 23 - 2010View Comments

If you have not heard of the iPhone, then I would like to shake your hand, as it has been coined for years the most desirable Smartphone on the market. The usefulness of the device caused me to buy it, with its diversity in the App Store, ranging from me being able to plan a Train Journey to Streaming Video over the air from my Computer.

This may sound like an Apple Fanboy speaking, but I find that although its a great device, there are some drawbacks that I would love to see fixed with the device in the next revision of the iPhone Software, which is hoped to be released around the iPad Launch, or later in the summer. I deliberately won’t include the fact that the device doesn’t have flash, as while I would like to see it included, Adobe would have to bring out a pretty optimized version as the Windows version is one of the most intensive tasks on my computer.

Improvements to the in-built applications

While the applications included by default are good, I feel some are not capable compared to web alternatives. For example, the Mail client on the iPhone just seems to be a battery drain for me, as it will not download 200 messages through exchange as requested, which means search becomes pretty much useless as I get many emails in a day, so i am forced to use the Google Mail web client, which is a vast improvement.

Although I have autofill checked in settings, I rarely have the fields autofilled on the sites I visit in the in-built Safari browser (some may say that this is a security risk, but my device has a passcode anyway when unlocked or powered on), and for some reason there is an “autofill” button? Surely if it was auto, you wouldn’t have to press a button!

In the calendar app, I have found it would be useful to have a year view, but we just have the options of list, day and month. Each day on the calendar that has something on it has a dot, which is not useful when looking at an overview. I have many calendars that do different things (like “Chase up”, “Personal Events”, “Work Deadlines”) which have a different coloured dot next to them, so having those on the month view would be handy for me, as I work mostly in that view.

I find it ironic that we are forced to use Apple Software as software that is created for the App Store that rivals the in-built software, yet the software is so limited, which follows Apples example of having a closed ecosystem (although having all apps checked in the app store may be a good thing to reduce support calls if the app is stable)

App Store Warnings

A recent news article stated that Apple had taken 5000 iPhone applications out of the App Store for objectionable content with rules such as “No Skin”. I feel this is excessive, as we can browse whatever site we like in the in-built Safari browser anyway, so all we really need is a popup dialogue saying “This application may contain flesh, nudity, or sexual images” with an accept or cancel, with the option of parental controls to prevent younger Apple device owners from seeing this.

Better Battery Life

This is the biggest let-down on the iPhone, and I have found that the introduction of Push Notifications has further worsened this. I have noticed on many updates from Apple that in the upgrade there is an option that says “Improved Battery Life” but have always found no improvement with the update.

Deleting Photos/Music on the device

This issue is a big one, if you have synced photos across from “My Pictures” on to the iPhone, unless using a jailbroken application such as MobileFinder and spending a long time trying to find where they are located, there is no way to remove those pictures from the device, which also applies to music. Come on Apple, if I have a picture I don’t want on my phone I have to untick the option from iTunes? What if I’m away from the computer?!

Transferring Songs FROM the iPhone

Another absurd problem, is that the only thing we can retrieve from our devices is pictures from the camera roll, so if our Computer dies and has to be reinstalled, we have to download an application that will do this for us, which is a major annoyance.

Bluetooth!

The iPhone has bluetooth, but will not do any sort of file transfers to other devices. Maybe this is to stop piracy or keep things locked down as Apple likes, but it would be a welcome feature.

iTunes Improvements

Some things in iTunes have been overlooked by Apple, such as the fact that Mozilla Firefox users can not synchronise their bookmarks to their iPhone, and judging by the amount of people who have downloaded the Latest Version of the browser, this affects way too many people.

If you use Google Sync and have the Contacts/Calendar synced to your phone over the air, iTunes will tell you this is happening and still give you the option to sync with desktop clients such as Microsoft Oulook, but does not do this. This option would be extremely useful for me so I do not have to use Google Calendar Sync, and can have the contacts synced with the Microsoft Application.

We should be able to Drag and Drop single tracks/podcasts/films straight onto the device through iTunes as if we only want a few tracks on the device, we must manually go through and check the boxes.

As you can see, I have many things I would like to see improved on the device which would make Unfortunately, I have not been impressed with the past few keynotes from Apple, and it has taken a long time to add things a lot of things people have been waiting for, and I sometimes feel the speculation ruins the Keynotes as some things we have high hopes for do not get included.

What would you like to see included? Let us know in the comments

7 wonders of the Linux world!

Posted by waqar On February - 23 - 2010View Comments

Most of you guys by now probably know that i am a Linux user judging by most of previous posts and i like using Linux so i thought i should make a post on why i would recommend Linux to other people and the things that make it unique the OSes out there. Ladies and Gentlemen, i give you, the 7 wonders of the Linux world!

1.Don’t pay anything for your OS: Lets start off with the most obvious and probably the biggest advantage of using Linux. LINUX IS COMPLETELY FREE. You don’t have to anything unlike Windows or Mac for which you have to pay a lot of money.
The Linux community has done an awesome job on making this neat, secure, efficient, good looking OS and they are giving away their work for free.

2.Forget about viruses (Well…..almost): It’s hard to believe that almost 90% of the viruses are made for windows. There are a lot viruses for Macintosh as well but when it comes to Linux you probably won’t ever hear a Linux user saying that he got a virus on his Linux box. Viruses in the Linux world are very close to extinct. This can be for a few reasons such as:

  • Most people use Windows and therefore hackers target windows
  • Linux is open source and if someone finds a flaw in the source code they will tell another developer and ask them to fix it
  • Linux is free so hackers don’t want to waste their time making viruses for something that big companies don’t use

3.More stability: Of course no operating system is perfect but Linux is by far the most stable and faster OS out there and it has been proven. There are fewer crashes and data losses. Personally i don’t know anyone who said “My Linux box crashed on me and i lost all my data :(

4.Linux gives you old computer a new life: Windows and Macintosh have very demanding hardware power. You need a pretty fast computer to run them so if you have an old computer you probably won’t be able to run Windows or Mac on it. Don’t throw away that computer yet because there are some very light weight Linux distros out there that will breathe a new life into you old computer. Distribution like Puppy Linux, DSL, DeLi, Xubuntu are examples of some light weight Linux distros that Function very well on old hardware.

5.Ready to use out of box: Now this one of the best things about Linux. It comes with a lot of software installed already and ready for use. If has a complete office suite, a web browser, E-mail client, IM client, graphics editor and a whole heck of a lot more. You might not even need to install anything.

6.Free support: Linux is open source and it has a real community of users and developers who really are out there to help you. If you run into a problem you can head over to the forums or even talk to the developers who will be glad to help you.

7.More customization options: In windows or Mac if you change the wallpaper you will still end up with pretty much the same desktop. In Linux it’s you choice. There are several customization options. You even choose different desktop environments such as Gnome and KDE on a single system. You just have to install it them.

Congratulations, my fellow Internet users.

While it may not be on this day, the Internet is indeed around thirty years old. One can argue that its older, but since we started using it, its been about 30 years. When did it all start? Well, Mr. Kleinrock of Stanford research claims that on October 29th, 1969 is when he first successfully transmitted data to a computer in Menlo Park. Aside from that, it’s been a great 30 years. Even more thankfully, censorship on the Internet is far and few between. Even though acts in Australia are providing filtering, most of the world still enjoys uncensored Internet, which is great. Many believe the core values of the Internet are free access to all data, for all. I myself, believe this. No one person should be restricted from knowing anything, and the Internet has been great tool for spreading news. Without getting to political, I’m finishing this statement with I believe that the Internet is the bane of all conspiracy theorists.

Anyway, I’ve gotten my point across to everyone, happy 30 years of Internet, and heres to another 30.

By the way, the picture is a visual representation of the internet.

Review: FileMail.com – Send larger files

Posted by Dombev On February - 16 - 2010View Comments

FileMail.com is a good service to send large files up to a size of 2GB over e-mail. Using email services such as Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail there are data size limit (Hotmail – 10MB, Yahoo – 20MB, Gmail – 25MB) This can be a problem when trying to send larger file types over email services.

FileMail.com allows you to send up to 2GB File size and multiple file upload. There are also different FileMail plans for Private/Personal use, Premium and Corporate account.
