Most of you probably know “Fences”, a program that organizes your cluttered desktop by letting you create and put boxes called “Fences” on your desktop and then you can create multiple fences and put your icons in them. For more info on Fences check out Jacob’s post on Fences. Now i really liked fences when i was using windows once upon a time and i was a little disappointed when i couldn’t find any Linux alternative to Fences BUT, thanks a youtuber named “gotbletu“, this problem has been solved because he found a screenlet called “Folder view” and that’s the same thing as Fences but for Linux. Keep in mind that Fences is still way better than Folder view but i not saying that Folder view is horrible either, as a matter a fact it’s pretty good. Lets begin
Since this is a screenlet you need to install a program called screenlets first which is a widget program, so just get that from Ubuntu software center.
After that you need to get the Folder view screenlet so download that from here. It will be in a “.tar.gz” format, Don’t extract it.
Once you download the Folder view screenlet you need to install it, so open up the screenlets manager and then click on the install button, then browse to the location where you put the Folder view screenlet file and just go ahead and install it.
Once installed find the Folder screenlet and double click on it to run it and you will a “Fence” open up. If you want to open up another Fence just double click on the Folder view screenlet again and it will open up another one.
Now you can customize this in quite a few ways if you right click on click on the Fence, there are quite a few options but i’ll let you discover that for yourself.
I this post helped all you guys who wanted to organize their cluttered Linux desktop. Have fun with it

Hey! What's your Ubuntu theme? I really like it! <3 Also, what's your res, looks huowge!
Not too keen on the whole fences thing, mainly because I have a Linux desktop with minimal icons, though my Windows one is covered (just how I like it). Are the fences collapsible (as in, like the roll up feature on a window) on Linux? I'd probably only use it if they were, otherwise it's only clutter up my desktop unnecessarily.
My theme is called “art-dark” it's available from gnome-look.org and no unfortunately the fences are not collaspable since this is just a screenlet not an entire program.
I am hoping for a better alternative so if i find one i will make a post on it
Hmm.. can't seem to find it.. Have you got a direct link?
Grr.. Probably won't use it then, for the time being as, as I said, it'll just add more clutter to my desktop.
Hmmm… why couldn't you also mention KDE's excellent features in plasma to do the same without installing any additional software? Surely, plasma with its built-in folder view is way superior and integrated into the desktop.
Pushing GNOME as the default face of linux desktop is becoming a disease not unlike H1N1.
> that’s the same thing as Fences but for Linux
You mean, for GNOME.
This is a GNOME desktop addon, not a GNU/Linux desktop addon. KDE 4.x has this by default.
I just wonder why it is not able to change folder inside the screenlet…
I wonder why he is unable to change folder inside the screenlets … Why not also mention the exceptional features of the plasma KDE to do the same without installing any additional software? It is an addon GNOME desktop, not a GNU / Linux desktop addon. KDE 4.x is present by default.
