CORRECTION: Windows users are currently out of luck for the Single Windowed Mode, although we hear that it is in the works for future releases. We apologise for any misconception brought about by this.
GIMP is an awesome open source image editor but one of the things that people found really annoying about GIMP in the past was that it doesn’t come in a single window. It has 2 or 3 separate windows which makes it hard for people to move it around and in my opinion it doesn’t look very professional and streamlined but thankfully that is going to change because the 2.7 SVN trunk build has a “single window mode” which allows you to put GIMP into one single window. The “single window mode” option will be available under the “windows” menu
This is a great improvement and it certainly will be appreciated by GIMP users. However if you are like me you probably don’t want to wait until the final release comes out right?
If you are using Ubuntu like me, you have add the PPA to your Ubuntu software sources. The PPA is located here.
Unfortunately the build is not available for Mac, so Mac users have to wait until the final release comes out.

very nice
awesome..
cant wait til the final release comes out….
The GIMP developers resisted this change/feature for years, claiming it was 'the UNIX way' to have each app do one thing well; they never would answer (me, at least) how windowing was related to the purpose of the tool.
I am excited for this change.
The problem with the GIMP's multiple windows isn't the application, it's trying to run it, ala Windows, on a single desktop. In Linux you simply give the GIMP and the images you're working on its own desktop. The resulting work surface is perfect for working with multiple images and is not encumbered by the artifacts of irrelevant applications.
oooo about time!
I just downloaded gimp-2.7.0-r28042-i686-setup.exe , ran it, but there is NO 'single window mode' option at all. I will try ubuntu version later at home. Until now…
You are outright lying. As of the latest 2.7 development release for windows there is no such option. I know it is in the pipeline but it is not there yet, thought it is already available on Linux.
It is a giant step forwards although other than “merging” the utility/tool windows onto the main window there are no other, a must have work space GUI improvements (like a mouseover [or a click] activated [possibly animated] tool panel expansion (( I don't need to see the all the tools and all their options after I selected and setup the tool I need; I need the work space however most of the time)) ).
Why there always have to be an idiot (most likely always one and the same one, a unix aficionado neckbeard of sorts) who brings up multiple desktop nonsense wherever the crappy GIMP GUI is discused.
It appears our author made a mistake on this one, and the post has been corrected. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Thanks for not deleting my comment and sorry for being confrontational. I must reluctantly admit that I like that poor bastard GIMP but I would not hesitate to give it a kick in a [figurative] groin whenever it [or rather its developers] deserve it, especially when it is about very basic features such as usable GUI, [down]scaling quality, text tool deficiencies and others.

wow
I always preferred Paint.net's single windowed mode to GIMP's multi windowed mode. However, I do hope that there will be an option of either single or multi windowed mode. Sometimes multi windowed mode is easier to work with.
No, thank you. I like the current multi-window mode. I can keep many files open and across many desktops as well! And move my toolbox and other required tiny windows as and how I please!
Nice Job waqar
Trying it out right now, and it's weird, the GIMP in a single window
I must say, it's not that pretty (it's clearly visible that it has always been a multi-windowed application), but I find that it works a lot better.
(And, of course, it's optional.)
Well I haven't used this editor yet. Will this work fine with Ubuntu also ?
Let me now if any one has used it..
Ubuntu the best, Fully featured, most secure OS tha microsoft and mac.
